Microsoft’s Office 365 is a set of productivity apps used by many businesses and individuals. It includes an easy download of Outlook, OneNote, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and publisher apps that run on laptops, tablets, and mobile versions for phones and tablets. It is more like an online subscription-based ecosystem to access remote data, run apps, exchange information, and collaborate on files. Recently, the Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center observed the sudden rise of nation-state threat attacks. To protect their users, Microsoft introduces a Nation-State Activity Alert for its Office 365.

According to a report by Microsoft in 2019, around 10 thousand people every year experience nation-state attacks. The company didn’t mention random stats but also named them. They stated that most of the attacks come from Russia, North Korea, and Iran. Iran attacks came from Helium and Mercury, while Russian attacks came from Strontium and Yttrium.

To avoid these attacks and to protect Microsoft accounts, Microsoft recently added a new notification feature that will appear on the dashboard of their defender for Office. It can be easily seen by security teams, management personnel, and network administrators.

This feature tracks nation-state hacking groups and email account attackers and then informs the users about the same.

In simple words, if these attacks target any user, Microsoft sends an email and informs the user about it and provides the necessary guidance on securing or protecting their devices and inboxes from attacks.

What is Nation-State Attack?

A nation-state attack is one of the dangerous types of cyber-attacks that generally hit larger targets such as major tech companies, government offices, national infrastructure, etc.

Understanding the Nation-State Activity Alerts on Microsoft Office 365 Dashboard Defender

The new study reveals that Microsoft is adding a new security alert known as ‘Nation-State Activity’ to its Microsoft Defender dashboard for Office 365. This new alert is set for employees in which they will get notified when targeted by nation-state threats, including business email compromise, credential phishing, and automated attack remediation.

However, the only problem with the notification method is that it relies on users checking and reading their email and then taking appropriate action, which is certainly not a common scenario. Most users do not check or read their emails, or sometimes notification reaches them when it is already late.

Microsoft Office 365 has made plans to add these notifications inside the Microsoft Defender of Office 365 dashboard for their users. This cloud-based security platform scans company’s accounts on Office 365 for threats and sends notifications to security teams and system administrators who can take immediate actions such as resetting internal passwords, email account passwords, or initiating a more comprehensive security audit.

To conclude, Microsoft added National-State Activity Alerts to its Office 365 Roadmap site on February 6, 2021, and expects this feature to roll out by the end of the same month.
